What makes your Super Sized bikes different?

Our bikes have fully lugged frames, so they are built on a very strong foundation.   Our frames, chains, spokes, rims, hubs, puncture resistant tubes and Kevlar tires (and many other parts) are all designed  to support heavy weights and long-term use.   It's not just the tires that make a bike Super Sized -- it's a combination of the materials, design, and all of the components.

I weigh more than 330 pounds. What bikes will work for me?

Right now the only two-wheeled bikes made strong enough for you are our own brand, Zize Bikes.  There are two custom made models.  On this page we’ll explain some of the differences between the Time of Your Life and A New Leaf so that you can understand the differences and choose your ideal bike.

Both of our models are specifically designed for overweight people.  However, they are both really smooth riding bikes that you can easily lend to your skinny kids (if you can bear to part with them—the bikes, not your kids!) or keep if you should decide to transform your body into one that is not as heavy.  Our bikes hold up to 550 pounds—but a 100 pound rider will have the same smooth ride as you do.

The Time of Your Life was designed to allow the rider to be seated and have his feet touch the ground.  This fundamental difference can dramatically increase the rider’s confidence level.  The center of balance is optimized with characteristics of a Super Sized Cycles customer—legs reaching forward, back straight, eyes headed straight out in front—thus increasing the center of balance and the rider stability.  This bike is designed to work in harmony with your body, not in spite of it.

The Time of Your Life can be purchased in one of two gear ratios, easy and normal.  The easy ratio is ideal for people who are quite out of shape, and haven’t really exercised in quite a while.  The gears are as low as possible, and make for really easy pedaling.  The normal gear ratio is ideal for riders who are in pretty good shape.  It provides a ride that is almost as challenging as the one you would get on A New Leaf.

As a great way to make sure your bike lasts your lifetime, if you start with an easy ratio and are ready for a bigger challenge, you can purchase a Ratio UP!  kit, and bring it to your local bike shop to have them install it.  Conversely, if you start with a Normal gear ratio and decide that you don’t want to work that hard, just get a hold of one of our Ration DOWN! kits, bring it to your bike shop, and you’ll be back in the business of riding just they way you like it.  By the way, you really won’t see any difference in the look of your bike, unless you are very attentive to detail—it’s simply changing the front chain ring and back sprocket.

A New Leaf is ideal for active people who like the look of a traditional comfort bike.  Its’ 8 speed internal gears provide for plenty of adjustments, and the smooth shifting among gears indicates a real quality bike.  You will FLY on this bike!

The goal of Super Sized Cycles is to make biking available to everyone.  The two models we are now making go a long way towards meeting that goal.

Help! My old seat is killing my butt!

We now have a selection of saddles that will ease your troubles.  The selection is limited right now, but we are on the lookout for awesome, comfortable saddles that allow you to ride without pain or damage.

t's also a good idea to invest in a pair of cycling shorts  with a padded crotch.   Ours are designed for both men and women.   The difference is unbelievable!

How do I measure my inseam correctly?

To measure your inseam, get a pencil and a book that has a binding about 2 inches thick.

Take your shoes off and stand facing a wall. Put the book between your legs, with the binding facing up and your feet about 6 inches apart. Hold the book firmly under your crotch - you should feel the same amount of pressure as sitting on your bike saddle. Make sure your legs are straight, and hold the book square against the wall. Mark the spot on the wall at the top of the book. Measure the distance from the floor to the mark - this is your inseam.

For accuracy, repeat the measurement several times and calculate the average. You may need to interpolate for height and shoe size.

When I lose weight, can I still use my Super Sized Cycle?

All the bikes that we sell can be used whether you weigh 100 pounds or the maximum listed for that bike.  Our brand, Zize Bikes, are designed especially for continuous use, no matter what your weight.  (Which, by the way, is great for those of us whose weight seems to fluctuate with the winds.)

There are some cases where you might want to get a different bike.  For example, let's say you get hooked on riding, and get really into bikes.  You start salivating when you read about the latest Tour de France road bikes.  At this point you may want to add another bike to your repatoire, cause it sounds like you've got it bad.  Or maybe you've discovered mountain biking, and you want a cycle you can really beat up.  Again, time for a different bike.

You may find, as I have, that one bike is no longer enough.  I now have three, and will be adding more as I find them :)  And each of my bikes serves me well, depending on my mood and the type of ride I'm taking.  If, however, after investing in a Super Sized Cycles, you decide that you want to be a one-bike-person, and it's time to change rides, please send us a note.  We frequently get requests for used Super Sized Cycles, and we'd be happy to help you sell yours.

Can I get an electric-assist motor for the Supersized PAV?

Our Supersized Personal Activity Vehicle is an awesome way to get around on 3 wheels.  The manufacturer does make an electric-asssit for it, but it is not recommended for over 220 pounds.  If you'd like an electric assist tricycle, we recommend the iZIP Tri-Cruiser.

I have a rather substantial tush. Do I need the stretch PAV?

The knees are bent when riding a PAV. The distance from the center of the seat to the pedal when extended away from the seat is a minimum of 24" and a maximum of 29". This will accommodate most inseams of 25" to 30". The stretch brings those numbers to 32" and 37", which will accomodate most 33" to 38" inseams.

Why does it take so long to get my bike?

The short answer is that the bikes are custom-made.  What this means is that each bike is built after we receive your order.  The process included building the frame, powdercoating (like painting) the frame, attaching the parts, and shipping the bike out.,  This generally takes 4 to 6 weeks, if we hit it just right.

Our goal is to have enough inventory that you won't have to wait for your bike, but we're not yet at that point.  The good news is that the wait is well worth it--you'll love your Super Sized Cycle!

Will you ship to places other than the US?

We are happy to ship our Zize Bikes anywhere in the world.

Some of our other products we are unable to ship due to  manufacturer's guidelines and/or international regulations.  Please send us a note with the product you're interested in as well as the specific address you'd like it shipped to, and we can let you know if we can deliver those items, and at what cost.  If we can't help, we're happy to connect you to sources that may be able to assist you.

Please note that we cannot ship Nutcase Helmets to locations outside of North America.

Do you have a payment plan?

Yes!  The payment option is available for any model costing $1000 or more.   You have the option of breaking your invoice into 4 equal monthly payments or into 6 montly payments, with the first one being 25% of the total due.  Due to the fact that we're online only, we have to provide the financing ourselves, so no bikes will be shipped until payment is completed

What size are the spokes?

Spoke size is 14 guage straight stainless, built with brass nipples on a downhill/free ride rim...that means its REALLY strong! Spokes are laced in a 3 cross pattern.

I'm 6'2", and about 450lbs. Obviously, I need a bike!

I would recommend A New Leaf or the Time of Your Life, depending if you want a more traditional bike or one that’s more comfortable to ride.  Yes, they’re expensive, but it is such a worthwhile investment.  What else could you invest in that would bring you so much pleasure as well as be so good for you?

I am 430# and wife is 320#.

I agree with your idea of cycling to lose weight--it's working for me, plus it's just so much fun!  My husband and I try to go out every day--it's nice to have the time together, and it really helps with the weight loss.

I stand 6'4" tall and weigh approximately 450 pounds.

You sit pretty much upright, and most of your weight will be on the saddle, not your arms. You can also adjust the handle bars to make them higher, if you want it to be even further upright.

I weight 450 pounds.Do you have any recumbent bikes?

Currently the only recumbent we have is a 3 wheeler, semi-recumbent.  It sounds like you're more interested in a bicycle.  I have been working with a couple of manufacturers to see about them increasing the strength of their recumbents and making them available on my site; I will continue with renewed passion!  In the meantime, I'd encourage you and your wife to go to some local bike shops and try some recumbents and see how they feel.  Even if the ones you try aren't strong enough to purchase and use on a regular basis, it will give you a feel for actually being on a recumbent.

The other thing you might try is a recumbent stationery bike to use regularly.  While it's not the same thing in terms of fun, it does allow you to practice the same movements and make sure your bodies like them.  I have used a stationery recumbent at my gym and was very distressed to find that it actually makes my achy knees worse, which is not a problem with an upright bike.  Again, I'd encourage you to give it a try to make sure that it will work for you both.

Will the 3 wheeler hold my weight of 420?

Absolutely, it holds up to 550 pounds. They're really fun tricycles, too, as well as being so sturdy

Is there any "standard" bike in commercial production?

Here's what I can tell you about searching for a bike that is sturdy enough for me.  I spent literally weeks searching the net (over 100 hours) for bikes that were built to hold my weight.  I interviewed local bike shop folks and bike "gurus."  What I'd found, not unlike you, I'm sure, is that there just isn't anything out there.  Thus SuperSizedCycles.com was created.

How can a person with a big belly ride?

Depending on how big a person is, knees hitting the belly can be a bigger or smaller problem.  Typically the bikes sold at www.SuperSizedCycles.com have upright handle bars, which mean that the rider is not leaning over him (or her) self, thereby eliminating a lot of that friction.  If the rider is really fat, there will be some hitting of the belly, but it shouldn't be enough to interfere with the ability to ride.

How much assembly is involved?

The amount of assembly involved really depends upon the bike that you order.  Most of them are fairly easy to assemble, and instructions are included.  If, however, you're not comfortable with mechanical things, I’d highly recommend taking your bike to a local shop and have them assemble it.  That's not a bad idea, anyway, because it's always good to have local folks you can check in with.

"The bike is brilliant and has made such a difference to our lives. Thanks again to everyone involved."
